Football at the fringe

15 August 2008

After nine days of soccer bonanza, the school team of Nangkor Higher Secondary School emerged as this year’s Pemagatsel League Champions defeating the Veteran’s Team comprising of school teachers of the dzongkhag with a score margin of 3-2 on a wet day on August 10. Played over a period of nine days, this year 13 local teams participated in the tournament organized jointly by the Dzongkhag Administration and Nangkor School.

The prizes were dished out from the entry fees of the teams. “It is not the prize money that is important but the spirit of participation and the love of the game which is more important,” Suman said.

In a related story, a team from Dunglagang thrashed Damphu HSS to claim victory over this year’s Tsirang Monsoon Football Tournament Rolling Trophy.

Eight teams including one from Drujeygang in Dagana participated in the tournament. The number of teams participating in this year’s tournament was less because of similar tournaments going on in different parts of the country.

The teams, although mostly from the villages, strictly followed FIFA rules- where teams had their own jerseys and were not allowed to play barefoot.

The winners were awarded the rolling trophy and a cash prize of Nu 5,000. The runner-up took Nu 3,500. A basketball tournament will be organized soon followed by archery and football in September. Football at the fringes is slowly but surely catching up.
