Transport United takes Bhutanese Football to a Higher Ground
4 July 2008
For anybody who follows the country’s club football championships, Transported United Football Club’s got to be as popular as Manchester United. After all, such is their dominance. They are the four-time defending champions and look all set to do it all over again in the ‘A’ Division National League 2008. After winning all their four games in the league so far, scoring twenty four goals at a staggering average of six goals a game, they are leading the points table.
Although, established in 2000, the club had a few quiet years before starting to win in 2004. Since then, they have made winning their habit and won silverwares and hearts. Now the club has a legion of fan following. The club has also played in the AFC Presidents Cup, where domestic winners from the countries in the region participate. The club can boast of reaching the quarter finals in its 2006-07 edition in Malaysia.
Nidup Dorji, the club’s manager, attributes the success to a desire to achieve excellence. He said that when there is such desire, everything else starts to fall in line. Like every other ‘A’ Division clubs, TUFC receives a grant of Nu 1,00,000 from the Bhutan Football Federation. But that money falls way short of meeting the club’s expenditure.
Allowances for players alone exceed Nu 1,50,000. But an efficient management with the Director of the RSTA as its President was instrumental in roping big sponsors. The FBT showroom in Thimphu is among its current sponsors.
Among its main attractions this season, Transport United has two Nigerian imports. They were playing in India. Ezecowais Ezl Collins, who plays as a striker and is quite a hit with the fans, said that though the ground condition here is not up to the mark, playing for a champion club was a privilege. He believes that it was a good initiative on the club’s part to get international players. He said that it was one way of promoting the club as well as football at large. But the club manager is quick to add that it was not easy getting them here. Getting their visa processed was just one of the challenges.
The club has shown ingenuity, conviction, has invested big, is successful and is setting the standards for others who are still complaining about the lack of money and fan following.
Transport United has taken the initiative in its own hand and shown faith in the belief that there is true potential in Bhutanese football. It now remains for the others in the race to take the lead and show more conviction. And then the day cannot be far when Bhutanese fans will be cheering for our domestic teams like we are now doing for some European clubs.

My name is Erol Ertugruloglu, and I regularly play the game football manager. The developers of the game are always looking for ways to enlarge their already very detailed database. Up until now Bhutan was sort of a grey area with only Transport United’s kit and players being known. I am convinced that this should change. Looking at Bhutan’s recent result in the South Asian Federation Cup, nearly beating India in a tremendous match I am convinced that Bhutanese football is on the same level as nations like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and perhaps even India.
However, in football manager this does not show. This could be the result of the relative isolation of the country. With the opening of the Bhutanese league, I think it is time for Bhutan to enter the database of football manager. Thus, if anybody has useful information about the Bhutanese clubs and players I would be happy to pass it on to the developers of the game. Also for mister Eze Collins this would be good, because then he would enter the database of a game that is played by millions accross the globe.
