The glories of the last shangri-la

24 October 2008

Bhutan as she emerged in the 17th century, was the life work and the legacy of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. By 1650, Zhabdrung was universally recognized as the legitimate soul of Bhutan. But the history of modern Bhutan began only in 1907, when Ugyen Wangchuk, the monarch of destiny, assumed the throne with the title Druk Gyelpo. When Great Britain, representing the largest power on earth, proclaimed war and threatened annexation, Bhutan heroically challenged that threat to protect its own boundary. In the political field, within the last few years we have experienced an ocean of changes; from the instable years of Desis to the stable hands of monarchs and to an era of individual rights, our nation moved successfully.. We are today more fortunate with living the democratic setup. Where the people have respect to the individual. Now we are in the era, where the people have explored every planet and the distant spots of solar system, a fact with which our ancestor could never have visualized.

There fore, it is our moral obligation to preserve the age old values of our nation for the future generation to ensure continuity of Dharma in our beautiful country. We must, as a true patriot, stand up, to uphold all good things for the country and ready to face every challenge. As Sir Walter Scot said, Breathes there the man, with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, This is my own, my native land!
