Campus of the distinguished(Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa, Minister of Health)

30 June 2008

Alma Mater

Yurung Junior Secondary School, Yurung, Pemagatshel Teachers’ Training Institute, Samtse

Higher Education:
National Institute of Education, Singapore Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, Scotland University of Bristol, England

Memories of Campus Life:
Three different institutes in three different countries and different cultural settings as well as learning environment gave me a holistic campus life experience. In Singapore, I was considered as a local student and therefore elected to the Students’ Council. Being a student councilor, I had the privilege to be invited to all important functions. I had also undergone one month leadership training sponsored by the Government of Singapore. This was the most tough but memorable outdoor pursuit.

In Edinburgh, I was nominated to the Students’ Council as the foreign students’ Representative. Here, I learned a lot from living together in a hostel run by Edinburgh Medical Society. Out of 18 inmates, only two of us were from third countries (Ghana and Bhutan). Learning, living and eating together with local students was more educating. In the University of Bristol, it was a totally different hostel life experience as I chose to stay in the International Students’ Hostel. I made friends from different countries.

Most memorable day in campus life:
The day I submitted my thesis to my supervisor- Professor. This marked the end of my hectic academic activities including assignments, examinations in the University of Bristol.

Messages to students:
Having had opportunities to live and study in different countries, I am convinced that we, Bhutanese, are fortunate to be born in the Kingdom of Bhutan. Education, health and many other essential services are provided free in our country on an equitable, just and merit basis. Majority of parents in other countries find it extremely difficult to send their children to schools let alone colleges. I therefore urge you, students, to invest your time now for your brighter future as our Beloved Fourth King would always wisely advice us. You are intelligent, diligent and capable of becoming what you want to become. You must draw up a clear road map for your life or life goal sets. Discipline yourself and work hard towards your life goal sets. You must also uphold our core values such as honesty and humility. One day you will be surprised and satisfied to find yourself that you have reached the destiny you have determined.

When you are in school, remember the following Cs:

Commitment: Commit yourself to your studies

Competence:
your commitments enable you to be competent in the subjects you have chosen.

Confidence: Your subject knowledge and competence makes you feel confident. You have to have confidence in your self so as to make others feel confidence in you.

    what a joke?

  2. Jigme on June 30th, 2008 3:43 pm

    I cannot control my laughter.

  3. sheri on July 1st, 2008 9:11 am

What are the degree/ qualifications Zangla got from these insititutions? This man is now a minister against the very government rule that requires a college degree (not a long distance or fake one) for a MP. This is sad, a clear example of disrespect for the law of the land.

  4. kencho on July 1st, 2008 4:47 pm

He can hardly write a grammatically correct English sentence.
He just has ego only. What a good choice of Minister by the DPT Government.

  5. dil maya rai on July 1st, 2008 10:24 pm

its inspirational to primary school teachers! and hats off to this man who made it despite all criticisms…wonder what it takes to be a minister in reality! I was expecting his name in the list of compulasory early retirees…but so sad it wasnt there! :(

A hat is missing in the cowboy’s outfit! haha

What are all the people above jeering at? You are laughing at one of the most learned, qualified, efficient and able administrators in the country today. True, he didnot have a formal degree before joining service. But after that, he’s got diplomas and a masters from the university of bristol. As a sherubtsean, we too had our doubts when he came as principal. But he proved his worth during his stint as one of the most able and knowledgeable principals that Sherubtse had ever seen backed by even more knowledgeable vice principal in the person of Thakur sir. If you people think you are better, then talk to him on any subject, literature, philosophy, science, technology, politics, anything… then you’ll find out for yourself and be humbled. I am a senior civil servant now with a masters. But in front of him, I am nothing, knowledgewise or in any field. Today, he is the only politician who can give his views in impeccable dzongkha and flawless english with full justifications. I worship him because I have seen in and out abt him for five yrs in Sherubtse and more as a civil servant. You people are undermining yourself by laughing at him. Look at yourself first.

Dil Maya Rai. What an unprincipled person you are. You are a double standard. Are you sane? You lift his image, place it on your dirty head and then through it in the gutter. He is one Bhutanese who is genius. Go to hell to doctorate qualifications. This man has five times the knowledge of a doctorate. He is a historic man too. When very few Bhutanese had the capacity to become High School headteachers, he took over the hallowed post of the head of Sherubtse Collage. It was this highly learned man who destroyed the fools’ paradise at Sherubtse by introducing honours courses and thus devised to keep the otherwise waisters busy. I missed by a norrow one year of this programme as a senior student and ate and slept like a pig for five years at Sherubtse doing a pass course. He is historic too for being the second Vice Chancellor who effectively laboured to give birth to a real university for Bhutan. Now he is talking of a medical college in Bhutan. Bhutan is extremely fortunate for her true son in Honourable Lyonpd Dasho Zangley Drukpa. Cheers Dasho, and we look forward to further benefit from your ingenuities!

Dechen, jigme, sheri, kencho and dilmaya rai. You lowly people. Hope you learnt a lesson. Never insult a genuis without knowing anything abt him. You people have to take birth 50 times to be as intellegent, learned and wise as Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa. You have to be associated with someone to know that person and only then, you will be qualified to comment. Otherwise keep shut. I’m also a masters degree holder and a civil servant who had the opportunity to study at Sherubtse during this great man’s tenure as the most knowledgeable and able administrators. Still today, I become an ant in front of this great man. Except for few, I doubt whether any better Bhutanese can be found who is more knowledgeable, well informed, refined, polished, linguistic, farsighted and all rounder than Hon’ble Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa.

  10. Lotrey on July 5th, 2008 6:16 am

I have been closely following and reading every news posted on the websites. But it’s really disheartening to see such a lowly narrow minded people make fun of uprising and knowledgeable senior civil servants in our country Bhutan. It directly shows that these people who jeers at successful, commited, and loyal person like Lyonpo Zangley are foolish and demoralising themselves. Looking to their words, they are like such an intelligent people who could even undermine those competent son of a bhutan! If you guys can do better than him, prove it, don’t simply laugh at one who is way far above you all in every aspect!
Hon’ble Lyonpo, wish you all the best!!!

  11. Jigme on July 5th, 2008 7:37 pm

Haaahahaha, I can’t stop laughing still. Those ppl amazed at Zangley’s intellect have their heads filled with something else instead of brain.
If Zangley is considered such a great man Bhutan must have been a country exporting human resources since 95% of the Bhutanense have his greatness.

  12. Tera on July 7th, 2008 10:54 am

One joker appreciates another joker. There is a world far beyond sherubtse. Sherubtse is not the peak of learning. It is the place for resides. All the filtrates go to scholarships abroad and residues run to Sherubtse.

  13. Tashi on July 8th, 2008 10:35 pm

Jigme, as ppl above said…you are just disgusted because you cant bear to see someone far…far…far…far…far better than urself. Go hang urself. That will relieve your sorrow. And Tera.. the sherubtse you are talking of is the present one, not the Sherubtse of Dasho Zangley’s time. Irrespective of all, Dasho Zangley has proved his worth beyond Sherubtse… or you must be doubting the competency of the very person who awarded him Bura Maarp and the title of Dasho?? That is a sin…because, not every person receives the honour unless you are the best among the best. That proves it. Any further arguements? and I will have a reply.

  14. Nalenjan on July 9th, 2008 5:04 am

Jigme and Tera. You fool of the fools. Lowly of the lowest. It is very sad to note that such persons like you exist in Bhutan, who can undermine her hetherto only college and dishearten one of her true sons. There is no point arguing with the fools like you. By making such remarks, you are even disrespecting the red scarf given to him by no other person than our beloved jewel, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, who had the vision of a God to appreciate and recognize the true sons of the Pelden Drukpa. When you brand us fools, you also brand the Bhutansese as fools who elected him as their leader by populer vote.Lyonpo Dasho Zangley need not be recognized by such dogs like you. We may not have been that intellegent to be among the best selected to be sent abroad for studies but we are not that fools as to not be able to critically appreciate a person’s abilities. If you are that irresponsible and untrue even to your own conscience which actually recognize his greatness deep down in your hearts, then you are doing a great disservice to the media also, as people will soon find out that the comments on the media are all bogus and untrue. So, I feel that unless your arguments are supported by facts, you are simply to be ignored.

  15. Nalenjan on July 9th, 2008 5:54 am

Our beloved Sherubtse is indeed the peak of learninng. As far as I know, her the then principal His Excellency Lyonpo Zangley Drukpa, her the then Vice-Principal His Excellency Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel, and their brilliant students His Excellency Lyonpo Namgay Penjor and His Excellency Lyonpo Dorji Wangdi are so many of Sherubtsians occupying so rarest of the rare new ministerial posts. Therefore, I am so proud to be an alumni of my beloved Sherubtse, as would be other ex-Sherubtsians. I hope this is a big blow to Jigme and Tera.

  16. chador on July 10th, 2008 9:35 pm

Bhutan observer is just making an arena to induce fuss, they got nothing to attrack readers. it is never wise to jump in the pool to swim where the swimmers in the pool are there to help drown you. live your way, you erecting a big plank target to shoot to your aim, even a blind hearing of your shot and of the size of the plank, he would say i can play better with a small size plank target. Do you need further explanation? comment!

  17. chador on July 10th, 2008 9:48 pm

In the heat summer days Bhutan observer would come up in the headlines “HOUSE FLIES APLENTY”. But where? In their office infact. Then they would say in our homes.

  18. jigme on July 14th, 2008 7:37 pm

Zangley is definitely a fool and his supporters are obviously more foolish. Zangley combined with Khengpa Dorji Wangdi epitomizes the way fools think and talk.

  19. sherub on July 15th, 2008 8:49 pm

Oh my God… help! This jigme is so frustrated with someone’s success and limelight that he might commit suicide… anytime. Jigme’s parents, are u listening?

  20. kencho on July 24th, 2008 8:10 pm

People should have listened to Zangley’s recent speech given at a health function. What a shame for the country. Is he capable to be a minister????hahahhaha

  21. kezang on July 28th, 2008 2:46 pm

Despite being an egoistic man his knowledge is very bookish and lacks depth. The empty ego is a trait of the dzongkhag that he hails from

  22. Tshencho on August 29th, 2008 11:33 am

Leaving behind Lyonpo Zangla and this hopeless present Home Minister, there are lots of capable candidates. Wonder, how and why these self loving and self respected man got elected. And this a pig type man, who occupies the seat of Tshogpen. Who is he and what is he doing on the seat of Tshogpen? He have all the same as his appearance. He even don’t know how to speak.

  23. Tshencho on September 12th, 2008 10:04 am

Mr. Zangla in anyway is somewhat ok. He seems to be fit but what about this hopeless Home Minister. He doesn’t know how to address himself. A man who doesnt know how to speak ones own language, can he be fit for the post of a Minister? He is there to fill up his big belly and enjoy government’s money. Another man, who is not different from a pig. He is made to sit on the seat of the national speaker. I don’t think ABC would come out from his mouth. What is going on with our country…. Oh god!

  24. Dr P.S. Narayana on October 6th, 2008 5:44 am

I know Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa for five years during my stay at Sherubtse as Colombo Plan lecturer in the department of commerce. Zangley Dupka was a good administrator and a knowledgable person. I know many of my students have become ministers in Thimpu and occupying many respectable positions. My request to everyone is to appreciate good in everybody. Zangley Dukpa has done incredible job of bringing welfare whereever he went. Today he is the health minister and I really congraulate him on this achievement. I also know Thakur Singh Powdyel, vice principal of Sherubtse in those days. I also felt very happy when he bacame
    Education minister.
My friends, please appreciate good works of other people. If possible, you also do good things instead of discounting and criticizing others. Donot pass any nasty comment on my posting as many of you who do not know me, visit thimphu and ask any one who graduated from Sherubtse during 1991-1995. Everyone of them knew me for sure.
    Keep up the good work.

  25. rigsel thayae on October 13th, 2008 8:34 pm

people really get mad when somebody is repected by every one and being placed at the the top. infact i am really sad to know such a people existing in our country. they dont know anything and they go on blaming someone . Those people should think extra . those people who blame zanglay drukpa are really mad.
we are very unhappy to have such a nasty human being born in pure land of ours. i think this people will never be able to reach at the height of the knowledge of zanglay drukpa even if they were to born for 1000 times or even more.

this people are really jealous of some others knowledge and intelligence. if you really cant live seeing zanglays knowledge, then just hang yourself and rest in peace rather then creating living with dead mind

  26. Dr. Joseph Koyippally on November 8th, 2008 1:45 am

    Dear friends:
When I worked at Sherubtse as a lecturer in English in 1993, Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa was the principal of the college. As far as I learned about him, he was a thorough gentleman with with impeccable nationalist credentials. He had only the inrerest of his country in his mind. He could very well manage wonders with the limited resources available to him. Hardwork and focus are his top qualities. Since joining Sherubtse, I have worked in seven universities around the world. I can tell you this: Dasho Zangley was the most hard working head of an institution that I have come across.
I also remember his coordial, and diplomatic relation with students, and other members of the staff, especially Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel, who also no doubt, deserved the position as Minister of Education. Dasho Zangley was simply a marvellous manager. Maybe, he has some defects like every other every individual; but, they are far insignificant compared to his mighty contribution to the kingdom of Bhutan.
