Biodisc, the latest trend in Pemagatsel
18 August 2008
One of the latest trends to hit the imagination of those living in Pemagatsel town is the supposed
heath benefits of Biodisc therapy. This glass disc, which is a little bigger than our palm, is supposed
to do wonders not just for humans but even cars. Gyembo Namgyal reports.
No wonder then, that this could be one universal solution for humans, plants and even cars. But this disc comes at a price which is beyond the reach of most people, at Nu 32,000 a disc.
Barely four months since its introduction, it has at least 50 active members and with the very aggressive marketing strategy it practices, the membership will likely multiply. Each Biodisc user has to find another two users who will have to buy the disc and the process continues downwards.
A Biodisc user with two sub members is supposed to get 50 US Dollars. The pyramid structure of the scheme thus benefits those in the higher rung, thereby letting those in the down-line work more. Thus the cycle of selling the scheme goes on and on.
Although it is too early for local users to claim its health benefits, most speak of remarkable improvement in their well-being within a short span of time. A health official (seeking anonymity) claims that his chronic joint pain has completely disappeared. That too in a short span of using Biodisc. He said even his taste buds have enhanced- that his beer tastes much better after having it treated with the disc.
The treatment of water involves just letting water or any liquid flow over the disc and then drinking it. 1.5 litres is recommended in the early morning at one go in an empty stomach. A similar quantity of water is recommended for consumption in the afternoon and in the evenings. Thus 4.5 litres of water is recommended for each person each day.
A regular consumer claimed that it tastes different from ordinary tap water. Another Biodisc treatment is letting light pass through the disc to the affected body part.
“This change in taste of any liquid material is said to be because of the structural arrangement of water molecules made possible by biological elements embedded in the glass disc,” said Govin, an ardent believer in the powers of the disc. “I felt much better after using Biodisc. The bodily pain and the overall well being improved but when I stopped using it even for a week, the pain and the lethargic feelings came back,” said Tshewang Lhendup, a contractor.
Chenga Lhendup, a shopkeeper who suffers from high BP and blood sugar, also claims to have had similar positive benefits. He wants to authenticate his claim by undergoing a medical test.
His mother in-law, however, said that she did not feel any changes even after using it. Cheki Penjor, another user, also did not feel any changes. Similarly, another official also could not confirm whether he felt any better after using the product. “People living nearby continue to take treated water, claiming it has positive effects,” he said.
Kencho, an engineer, claims that using treated gasoline in his car- his mileage had increased dramatically, besides providing a smooth ride. Another person said he saved six litres of gasoline between Phuentsholing and Thimphu using the disc treatment. A local even said that plants watered with treated water grew healthier compared to the normal method.
There are others who expressed their apprehensions about the product and its long term health implications. “Such claims of immediate results could mean the presence of radioactive elements. If the product is completely safe, why don’t the health department use it in their treatment regime? This would save lots of time and money besides ensuring a healthy life,” argued a senior official who wished to remain anonymous.
Another official was wor-ried about the amount of cash that is flowing out of the dzongkhag and ultimately out of the country in the form of hard currency. Bank official confirm that transaction worth more than Nu 1 million had already taken place on Biodisc alone so far.
Mr Govin, an engineer, is among the few whose account is credited with the down-line commission. He said that he received 750 USD but others claim that they did not receive anything despite being one of the first to subscribe to the Biodisc product.
The reason for this is due to imbalance in the down-line of the pyramid like structure, says pro Biodisc members. The pro Biodisc members claim it enhances health and the general well-being of a person, besides dreams of a secure future in the promised US Dollars with increased membership in the future.
Others who did not get lured by its scheme claim that it could be just another ploy by a company to make a quick buck before it collapseslike others have in previous years.

I simply feel sorry for our Bhuanese gullibles. It indicates how an ignorant and superstitious society like ours can be easily fooled and miserably exploited. I am surprised though that even when such stories pervade so thick in the air, heavily victimising so many of our fools, the Health Ministry is not coming up with proper clarifications. I feel the Royal Government should criminalise such schemes and punish both the perpetors and accomplices. If it is genuine and legitimate, why not the perpetors negociate for a deal with our government or seek for permission to practice this business in Bhutan?
The govt. of Bhutan ( Ministry of Health) should do some thing upon this issue.
Although I too have heard quite a lot about the Biodisc I have not yet seen one my self. If it does perform such miracles, why won’t any government adopt it in hospitals and save millions of money. I feel as many government officials have surely heard about this, something should be done without much delay before our money is poured out into someone’s pocket.
It should be legalised either or banned by Govt. as soon as possible . Even the educated people are fooled and forget about the rural. I heard this practice has even penetrated to rural villages.
Its a shame that the authorities have not commented on the issue.
If the product is beneficial as claimed. The health authority should
buy this magical biodiscs. Several patients can then make use of
the magical power of the disc.
The biodisc sales is targeted at the rich and educated who have
medical conditions and are willing to part their money to hope
to get relieve.
Its just impossible for a small piece of glass to change the molecular
structure of water. Where does the energy comes from ?
The very fact that the sales involves a pyramid strategy makes the
product dubious. There is no money back warranty for the product.
If you are not satisfied you will be stuck with the silly piece of glass.
The amazing thing is that there are people who strongly support the
product. They could be marketeers who engineer good reports to attract
more customers.
