MPs return from Denmark
31 October 2008
Bhutanese parliamentarians, who had been in Denmark on a five-day study tour, arrived back in the country on October 20. The 11-member delegation led by the National Assembly Speaker consisted of the lower house members of parliament (MP).
During the visit, the MPs were introduced to the Danish model for democracy, the three independent pillars of democracy (Government, Parliament and Courts), and other important pillars like municipalities, organisations and the press. They were briefed on various legislative processes including the working of various committees of the parliament.
A press release from the National Assembly Secretariat said the Bhutanese MPs were briefed on the work and functions of MPs, party groups and political parties. The Secretary General of Danish Parliament said he was happy to have Bhutanese delegation and hoped that they will be enriched with vast experiences of the Danish Parliament.
The National Assembly Speaker, Tshogpoen Jigme Tshultim, informed his counterpart that, guided by the draft constitution, the first democratic election and the process leading to it were smooth and trouble-free as was the transition to parliamentary democracy.
The press release said such interactive sessions and visits would not only promote relations between the two parliaments but would also solidify the good relations that exist between the two countries.
The Danish Parliament was the second Parliament that the Bhutanese parliamentarians had visited.
The five-day study programme was organised by Folketing, Danish Parliament as part of parliament Twinning Programme between the two Parliaments.
