People contribute for the People’s Welfare Fund

28 November 2008

Their Royal Highnesses Ashi Dechen Yangzom Wangchuck and Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck met the representatives of corporate agencies, private companies, hoteliers and contractors on His Majesty’s behalf to receive the cash contribution for the People’s Welfare Fund on November 24.

The press release from the Office of the Gyalpoi Zimpon stated that prior to and during the Coronation celebrations, many institutions, agencies and the public expressed their desire to offer Thridhar with gifts to His Majesty the King.

The Royal Government, then conveyed His Majesty’s desire, that not only should the government minimise expenditure on the Coronation, but that no gifts be offered to the King. Instead, any such gifts may be diverted to build a special fund for the people’s welfare, which His Majesty would use to initiate various projects to benefit the poorest of the poor.

His Majesty the King has repeatedly expressed, on many occasions, that the most deserving and needy sections of society will be granted Kidu. Since taking over the responsibilities of the King in December 2006, His Majesty has travelled all around the country visiting remote areas and granting Kidu to the most disadvantaged citizens. His Majesty the King also initiated many activities to help the needy. The People’s Welfare Fund will go a long way in helping the poorest people in the country.

Thanking the contributors, Their Royal Highnesses said that while their own funds may be meagre, the contributions would make a great difference to the poorer sections of the society.
