Nuns miss none of the fun
14 November 2008
Thirty seven anims (nuns) from Karma Drubdey Nunnery of Kuenga Rabten in Trongsa braved a freezing ride on a DCM truck they hired to reach Thimphu at midnight on November 4. They were anxious to get to the capital so that they could offer khadhar to His Majesty the King.
Their decision to travel two days ahead of the coronation was deliberate and prudent as they had reasoned that, in the event of a road block or vehicle mishap, they would still have time to make it to Thimphu.
“All the nuns wanted to come but some of them had to stay to look after the nunfunnery so we had a lucky draw,” said the Principal of the nunnery,
Anim Yeshey Choden. “So only the lucky ones have come here.”
The 37 plan get to the Tendrel Thang by four in the morning so that they don’t miss “one of the biggest and most significant events in our history,” Anim Yeshey Choden said.
Dorji Zangmo, 23, said that she was lucky to have got the chance to come. “I have never seen His Majesty in real life so this will be my first meeting with Him and I will cherish it forever.”
She said that she was lucky to have been born during the reign of a religious king as she had the opportunity to practice the dharma peacefully
and pray for long lasting peace in the kingdom.
“I prayed so hard at the time of the lucky draw that when I got selected I was overwhelmed with emotion,” said Kencho Zangmo, 20, from Bumthang. “To me, His Majesty is the moon in the night and the sun in the day.”
Kencho, Dorji, Anim Yeshey Choden and their 34 other companions plan to return to Trongsa on November 10 but said they would always pray for the well-being of His Majesty,
the people and the country.
Established in 1968, Karma Drubdey Nunnery is about 24 km from Trongsa on the way to Gelephu. It is home to more than 100 nuns.
