A chhorten for the King

14 November 2008

A five-storied replica of Bodhgaya chhorten is being constructed by Tshampa Karchung at Dubdey Pema Phendeling in Yangnyer Gewog, Trashigang. Karchung envisaged completing the construction on time to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo.

Even though the chhorten is yet to be completed, the gewog will perform rituals at the chhorten during the coronation on November 6. “We will perform a Phurpa Puday Reyphung during the coronation of His Majesty’s good health even though the chhorten will not be fully consecrated on the day of the coronation. We have kept November 19 as the auspicious consecration day which coincides with the descending day of Lord Buddha,” said Karchung.

“We have been building the chhorten to celebrate the coronation of our His Majesty. It is also for His Majesty’s peaceful reign and for the peace, security and prosperity of our country. The chhorten will also help to reduce landslides in the gewog,” said Karchung. The construction of the chhorten was supported by devotees. The five main sponsors of the construction were Yangnyer gup Duptho, Tshering Tobgay, Karma Tshewang and Jigme Gyeltshen.

A statue of Yoepamed will be installed in the sertog of the chhorten. The floor below will house a statue of Kinzang Lamai Zheylung, followed by a statue of Dorsem or Vajrasattva on the floor below. The chhorten will also house a statue of Dupthop Thangthong Gyalpo and Ugyen Norlha.

The ground floor of the chorten will house a statue of Temba. The statues are of sizes varying between three to five feet. Devotees can also circumambulate the 108 tiny chhortens built around the main chhorten.

The construction of the chhorten had begun about six months ago when Tsampa Karchung conceived and executed the construction with the help of devotees. More than Nu 1.8 million has been spent in the construction so far. Work remaining include painting of statues and building of 108 chhortens around the main chhorten. The paid workers are all from Yangnyer gewog.
