Two science question papers for class VIII

The Bhutan Board of Examination (BBE) is coming up with two sets of science question papers for class VIII students this year. This is because only some schools had the new edition of the science textbook while others had been stuck with the old, said Kesang Deki Tshering, Science Specialist Coordinator of BBE.

“Previously, we got letters from the Curriculum &Professional Support Division (CAPSD) mentioning that they wanted us to set question papers from the 2007 edition and, simultaneously, we had sent letters to the schools informing them about it,” she said.

She said she then started getting calls and letters from some schools that they had only the old edition. “So we followed up with the CAPSD and they suggested us to come up with two sets of question papers based separately on the new edition and old edition,” she said. “It will be fair for all the students.”

All schools are expected to receive the new edition of science textbook by next year.

Pema Gyaltshen, a class VIII Science teacher in Jigme Namgyel Lower Secondary School, said that the new textbook is difficult for the students. “The old edition of the text book was more biology- oriented but the latest text book is an almost balanced one.”

Wangchuk Rabten, Chief Curriculum Officer of CAPSD, said that the integrated science textbook had been developed a few years ago but the contents had not been balanced in terms of covering all basic science disciplines equitably. The text had thus been re-edited to make up for that imbalance.

“We started printing last year and the number of books printed is more than the students but the reason for the schools not having enough new edition science textbooks is that they had asked for the requisition only, not knowing the change of the syllabus,” he added.

He said that the untimely distribution of the text books was another hindrance that made some schools follow the old edition.
