Eight-limbed baby born

17 October 2008

In an astounding medical case, the first of its kind in Bhutan, a 35-year-old woman gave birth to a child with four hands and four legs in the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, Thimphu. The baby was 28 weeks old, when it was diagnosed during routine screening by ultraonography.

The mother then underwent caesarean section on October 8 as there was otherwise risk to her life. The baby did not have spontaneous breathing at birth. “The baby was declared dead after an hour of birth in spite of all life saving medical interventions,” said Sonam Dorji, spokesperson of the Ministry of Health.

According to Health officials, the cause of the death was because of premature birth and congenital abnormalities. In medical history, such cases are very rare. The case of ‘congenital genetic conduction’ was due to defect in cell division during early development stage of the foetus. “This may be called as incomplete monozygotic twins,” said Sonam Dorji.

Health officials warn all pregnant women to undergo regular checkup in order to check abnormalities which could be life threatening to both mother and child. “The mother of the baby would have probably died if she was not brought to the hospital,” said Sonam Dorji.
