Bhutanese archers eliminated

Both Bhutanese archers have been eliminated in the first elimination round at the Beijing Olympics. Dorji Dema was eliminated after securing 10 points less than Georgia’s Khatuna Narima-nizay. Dorji Dema scored 97 points as opposed to the Georgian archer’s 107. In the men’s elimination round, Tashi Peljor fell behind Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Pang Wang. Tashi Peljor had a tally of 100, 10 points behind Cheng Pang Wang’s 110.

A man in his fifties suffered a broken arm in a head-on collision between two trucks on August 11. The accident occurred at Rashuri about 15 kms from Pemagatsel town towards Samdrup Jongkhar at around 1.30 pm. According to Duba, 25, the driver of the empty truck coming from Samdrup Jongkhar, the accident occurred when a jack, which was kept underneath the driver’s seat, rolled unnoticed beneath the brake pedal.

Three people were killed on August 11 when a landslide hit a DCM truck at Taktikoti on the Thimphu-Phuentsholing highway. On August 9, three people were killed a few kilometres away from the same spot.

Bhutan celebrated the International Youth Day on August 12. The Education Minister, Lyonpo Thakur S Powdyel, gave a speech on the significance of youth in a country. The captains of 18 government and 12 private schools in Thimphu attended the programme. The youth day is celebrated in Bhutan to recognize and honour the Bhutanese youth who comprise about 50% of the population.

The Rangjung Vocational Training Institute (VTI) in Trashigang was struck by flash floods on July 26 and 31 when the Gamri Chhu swelled because of heavy rains in recent weeks. In the Rangjung VTI, around 100 metres of river protection embankment was lost to floods in two days.
