To dip the feet or not
4 July 2008
Gelephu residents who return home after shopping in the border town of Dhatghari are confused when only passengers and pedestrians are asked to dip their feet in the disinfectant, and not the drivers. This happens every day at the Indo-Bhutan gate where BAFRA staff ensure that people dip their feet in the bleaching powder liquid solution that disinfects the birds flu viruses.
“Every day, BAFRA officials ask my passengers to step out and dip their feet in the box. I don’t have to do that,” said Tamang, a taxi driver.
Residents said that the idea of dipping feet in the solution was unfair and illogical. “What puzzles me more is that when the concerned authority asks only the passengers of a vehicle to dip their feet in the box. Perhaps they don’t know that the drivers walk when they reach Dathghari,” said a private employee.
Tshering from Shershong said, “Assam and West Bengal have declared incidences of bird flu recently. If the concerned authority doesn’t make it compulsory for every driver to dip their feet in the box, it’s as useless as not doing it at all.” He thinks at least 50 vehicles go to Dathghari and return daily. That means 50 drivers who come home unchecked.
However, BAFRA officials said this is because of the large number of vehicles that traverse the gate every day. “Actually we’re supposed to make every driver dip their feet but because of heavy traffic, we ask only drivers who come from long distances like Phuentsholing, Samdrup Jongkhar and West Bengal,” said Kesang Dorji, the official on duty.
To dip or not to dip is the dilemma.

BAFRA staff at Gaylephu. Firstly, you have miserably failed in your duty by exampting the divers to dip their legs. Secondly, you dare to make this blatant public statement that actually you are supposed to dip for all but you deliberately exampt the divers. This discretion destroys the very purpose of your exercise. You are a traitor if you do not do your job but only give a false sense of security to our beloved nation. I hope His Exccellency the Agriculture Minister is not a party to this BAFRA conspiracy at Gaylephu. Therefore, may I request Your Excellency, on behalf of our nation, that you take immediate measures to correct this serious lapse, please?
