Pelki, the miracle baby

4 July 2008

It’s a miracle she is alive, though she cries and the injuries are still fresh and visible on her head. At the pediatric ward in JDWNRH, a poster stuck on the notice board says, “Listen dear, I am lucky to be getting only mom’s milk,” but that unfortunately is not the case with little Pelki, who lost both her parents in a tragic and gruesome accident on June 25.

The accident left 10 dead and seven seriously injured when the private van (plying as a taxi) veered off the road and plunged about 300 meters down at Dungayna, between Pasakha and Paktsina.

The 11-month-old Pelki, who is being spoonfed with milk, has been undergoing treatment at the pediatric ward. Even as she lies in a stable condition unaware of the circumstances she is in, her parents have already been cremated at their home in Paktsina.

The baby was referred from the Phuentsholing hospital to Thimphu on June 26, with a haemorrhage (bleeding) shock. The accident left Pelki in a critical condition as she suffered from a second degree head injury and interis kept at the isolation ward and is being cared for by her aunt, Gopi Rai. “Apart from milk, I am feeding her Cerelac but, after developing sores inside her mouth, she refused to eat. I have to spoonfeed the milk because the nurses have advised against bottle feeding, saying it could cause diarrhoea,” said Gopi Rai.

Gopi added that she was grateful to a well wisher who generously gifted baby Pelki with some necessities.

Meanwhile, even as baby Pelki is oblivious to what her future may hold, one of her uncles plans to adopt her. Her two elder brothers, aged six and four, are being looked after by their grandparents in Paktsina.
