RSTA declares transportation rates

27 June 2008

The MoIC has sanctioned the RSTA proposal for revision of public transportation costs including taxi fares, bus fares and hiring charges for trucks. The revision in fares will be implemented from July 1.

“We included the total operational cost of the vehicles loans and the salary of the drivers and calculated the cost of running the vehicles for one km, that comes to Nu 8.20 per km,” said Thinley Namgay, the RSTA chief engineer. By including a net profit of four percent, the fare comes to Nu 11 per km (for patrol) and Nu 10 (for diesel) for taxis.

The hiring charge for trucks (hired by the government) has also increased. For trucks in the heavy category (i.e. that carry eight to ten metric tonnes of loads), For trucks running in hilly regions, the hire charge has gone up by Nu 2.25 and Nu 1.92 for those running in plain areas. For the medium category of trucks, the increase is Nu 2.24 (for hilly regions) and Nu 1 for the plain areas. The bus fares, according an RSTA official, have gone up by two percent. “The bus fare from Thimphu to Gelephu has gone up by Nu 5,” he said.

The RSTA said the cost of public transportation may increase because of the hike in fuel prices.

“We have received petitions from taxi drivers and bus operators and are already looking into the issue,” said the Chief Engineer. Along with buses and taxis, the hiring charges for trucks will also be included.

Currently, the charge for bus fares has already been worked out. “We increased the bus fares in 2006. This year, we will increase it from the rates that were fixed in July 2006,” said a RSTA official.

Out of a total of 100 percent of the operational cost, 26 percent is for fuel and other lubricants.

    Dear Sir,

It is good news for taxi owners. But did ever the concerned authority scrutinize the actual socio-economic conditions of the rural communities and even the middle level people who are in large number while revising the taxi fares? My another query is: Is this increased fare remain for many years to come or will it revise as and when fuel price hike? Suppose in near future, if fuel price decrease then will the present taxi fares also decrease or remain the same at this present hike fares? In my opinion sometimes there are chances the fuel price will go down…So is there any policy framed to tackle that type of situation? Thank you.

    Dear Sir,
It’s good news for all taxi operator regarding increase taxi faie but one request for RSTA, since Bhutaness people don’t have any habit to go in taxi in meter basic usually thay go any place in reserave basic either long distance or local.

Basically like if you go Simtokha taxi operator charge Nu.15 per head and total they charge Nu.60 in total, in this regard how much now taxi have to charge per head like way same which rate chart given for 20 dist from T/phu, if RSTA issue same for local charge it will be very good for taxi operator.

    Just now view only.

It’s good news but the rate should be specific for local charges too.
